Description
Prevost Mountain, located on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, offers a variety of paragliding experiences suitable for pilots of different skill levels. The site is known for its thermal soaring conditions and the potential for small cross-country flights, particularly towards Crofton.
The site features three launch areas catering to different wind directions:
- The south and southeast launches provide excellent thermal and ridge soaring opportunities with scenic views of Duncan and the Gulf Islands.
- The west launch is best used during stronger westerly winds, as the glide to the landing zone (LZ) can be challenging on lighter days.
To fly at Prevost Mountain, pilots must adhere to specific requirements:
- Be current members of the Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada (HPAC).
- Be members of the Island Soaring Society.
- Have a current waiver on file with the District of North Cowichan. The waiver can be downloaded and submitted via email to islandsoaringsites@gmail.com.
Access to the site is controlled by a gated road, and pilots who meet the membership and waiver requirements can obtain a key from the Island Soaring Society. The key is stored in a lockbox at 6228 Fairview Way in Duncan. Coordination with other pilots is necessary, as there is only one key available.
For safety, pilots are encouraged to notify the 443 Squadron Flight Operations Centre before and after flying due to increased air traffic in the area. This can be done via phone at 250-363-5443 ext. 51081 or email at W12443-OPS@forces.gc.ca. Additionally, announcing flight intentions on air-band radio frequency 123.025 MHz is recommended.
Landing directions:
- From Duncan, head north for 4 km, then turn west onto Hwy 18 towards Lake Cowichan for 2 km. The primary LZ is on the north side of the road just before the highway bend. An alternate LZ is available at the Motocross Track, accessible via a gravel road past the main field.
