Description
The launch site is located at an elevation of 1660 meters and is accessible via a cable car from Luchsingen. From there, you will need to hike for about 90 minutes through Baerensol, Ober Stafel, and Oberblegisee to reach the launch site, which is a steep grassy slope.
The area is situated above Luchsingen, on the route from Schwanden to Braunwald. The lower launch site is relatively easy to find, and for those who have the time and energy, you can hike up to the upper launch site at Leuggelstock, which takes approximately 90-120 minutes.
Historically, this area was used as a training ground but is now rarely utilized as a launch site. It offers interesting opportunities for short cross-country flights within the Glarus Valley or even extending to Vorarlberg. Some pilots have also completed triangular flights from this location.
The launch takes place below a small wall and a row of trees. Since the area is not frequently flown, there is no windsock, and the launch site is not marked. The path to the launch site was shown by a local farmer, who you can ask for permission to use the site.
Below the lower launch site, there is another row of trees and a telephone line. Launching is possible even with moderate Föhn winds, although you will be lifted quickly.
There are several lines present, but they should not pose significant issues. The Föhn wind is pushed upwards by strong thermals, but you should be prepared for valley winds, which can make the descent turbulent.
Soaring conditions are excellent with moderate Föhn winds. The area is more protected by strong thermals compared to places like Schrina at Walensee. The thermals push the Föhn upwards, allowing for comfortable soaring below. However, avoid climbing too high to stay out of the Föhn zone.
Keep in mind that wind conditions can vary significantly lower in the valley.
