Conditions Optimales
Description
The Laber Mountain, located at the northern edge of the Ammergau Alps between the "Blue Land" and the Zugspitze region, offers a unique setting for paragliding and hang gliding. This site is well-suited for cross-country flights within the Alps and towards the flatlands. Thermal flights and shorter excursions into the Ammertal are frequently possible for recreational pilots.
The Laber cable car, with its historic gondolas built in 1955, transports pilots to the launch sites at 1680 meters and the summit restaurant with a sun terrace. Hang gliders are carried in a special hanging frame on the gondola. The cable car staff is friendly and assists with loading equipment if needed.
Current weather conditions can be checked via the Laber webcams.
Visiting pilots must purchase a day membership for €3 at the base station of the Laber cable car, where the flight logbook is also located. All pilots are required to sign in the flight logbook. The Ammergauer Flieger club members are available to provide an introduction to the flying area.
The site is not approved for pilot training with less than 10 altitude flights or for flight assignments requiring a "high-altitude flight certificate."
Commercial tandem flights are only allowed for club members. Interested tandem pilots should contact the club board.
Overflight restrictions:
- Do not fly over the NATO school area at the western edge of the Laber slopes, identifiable by barracks-like accommodation blocks and a helicopter landing pad.
- Maintain a minimum altitude of 150 meters over the "Wellenberg" swimming area and 50 meters over roads near landing zones.
Launch Sites:
1. GS/HG Launch Site Laber North Slope:
The North Slope is the only launch site where paragliders can take off. The slope is extremely steep, uneven, and slippery when wet, requiring a secure launch technique. The launch site may be temporarily closed to protect the terrain. Check notices at the base station and the "Current Information" section.
Hazards:
- Turbulence from trees and the Laberhaus in strong west winds.
- Venturi effect below the "Köpferl."
- Avoid flying into the valley below in west winds.
- Cable car wires.
The setup area at the summit plateau offers limited space for both the North Slope and South Ramp launch sites, shared with hikers and spectators. To ensure harmony, flight equipment should only be set up when ready to launch shortly.
2. HG Launch Site Laber South Ramp:
Only hang gliders can launch from the South Ramp. The ramp is relatively flat and short, requiring a secure launch technique (B-license). Launches are limited to a maximum wingspan of 12 meters.
3. HG Launch Site Laber West Ramp:
The West Ramp is ideal for pilots seeking tranquility. This scenic launch site is reached after a ten-minute walk, partly over exposed terrain. The path is often inaccessible in spring due to old snow. Only hang gliders and rigid wings can launch here.
The launch sites at Laber are challenging and not suitable for beginners. The Laber offers excellent views and good cross-country flight potential towards the west (Tegelberg). Information on regulations and landing maps is available at the base station. The North launch site is very steep and difficult in slippery conditions, while the South launch site is only for hang gliders with an adventurous ramp. The landing zone is spacious, located north of the swimming pool near the club hut, a five-minute walk from the base station. Do not overfly the swimming pool and NATO buildings. The cable car can transport non-flying pilots back to the valley. Alternative sites include 'Hörnle' in Oberammergau or the Garmisch flying sites 'Wank' and 'Osterfelder.'
