Conditions Optimales
Description
The launch site at 1833 meters is challenging and occasionally used, suitable for experienced pilots familiar with lee-side turbulence. Southeast winds are not ideal for the Jenner area. This launch site does not appear to be official; always consult with local pilots beforehand.
Region: Schönau am Königssee, Germany. The site record is 112.2 km from Jenner West.
The south launch at the transmitter on the Jenner's sub-peak is accessible via a ten-minute hike. Be cautious: the footpath to Jenner passes directly below the launch run, posing a rockfall hazard. The launch site is extremely steep.
The terrain is managed by the Berchtesgadener Drachenflieger e.V. The Jenner is one of Germany's most beautiful flying sites, offering spectacular flights over the fjord-like Königssee and views of the massive Watzmann. The flying conditions are demanding. The main landing area near the valley station can be turbulent due to valley winds and thermals. Information about the site is available at the valley station or on the club's website (http://www.berchtesgadener-gleitschirmflieger.de/). The Steinadler Project, which has been successfully practiced in Berchtesgaden for years, informs pilots about the nesting areas of golden eagles to avoid disturbing them. Please be considerate. With some luck, you can soar with the eagles outside their nesting areas.
This high-alpine flying site is not suitable for inexperienced pilots, especially during the thermally active months of April, May, and June. The cable car from the 1950s takes about 30 minutes to reach the mountain station. The launch site at Vogelstein (West and East) is a ten-minute walk from there.
Flying here is a dream. After the 30-minute gondola ride, the view is breathtaking. The deep blue Königssee and the Watzmann behind it offer a clear view. From above the Kehlsteinhaus, you can see all the way to Salzburg. The historical significance of the area adds to the experience. Once landed, there are plenty of romantic spots to end your day. The scenery is so beautiful it could rival any travel brochure. The landing field is vast. Short flights to places like Kehlsteinhaus, Untersberg, Grünstein, Watzmann, and Hochkalter are usually manageable. Longer flights to Kössen, Pinzgau, and Dachstein are more challenging. A small FAI triangle, for example, Jenner-Kehlsteinhaus-Grünstein-Jenner, is about 15 km. A larger triangle in the Berchtesgaden basin is Jenner-Kehlsteinhaus-Untersberg (fly to Rauen Kopf at about 2300 m from Kehlsteinhaus)-Grünstein-Jenner.
There are five launch sites: West, East, Southeast, and South. Another West launch site is at the Mitterkaserlift, which requires a 30-minute hike and is difficult in the afternoon due to strong crosswinds. The West launch site at Vogelstein is very demanding, with a short launch area (max two gliders can be laid out) and requires a controlled reverse launch in thermal conditions (beware of lee-side turbulence with north winds). During thermally active months, the landing area at the valley station can be very challenging (wind shear and turbulence). In Schönau, the landing area at Gasthof Bodner is a safer alternative for paragliders and hang gliders in thermal conditions. Avoid landing in high grass to prevent conflicts with farmers.
Note: The Reiteralpe is a restricted area according to the ICAO map (ED-R - Restricted Area). Although rumors suggest it might be accessible on weekends and holidays, it is not recommended due to legal reasons. On weekdays, it can be very dangerous as helicopter pilots practice special missions, posing significant risks to both air sports enthusiasts and helicopter pilots.
