Located in Rocchetta di Vara, Italy, this paragliding site offers a takeoff height of 1000 meters with a height difference of 330 meters. It is a medium-difficulty site, regularly used for soaring flights, and toplanding is possible.
To get there, take the A-12 GENOVA - LIVORNO highway and exit at BRUGNATO. If coming from the east, it's the first exit after La Spezia; if coming from Genoa, it's immediately after Carrodano. After the toll booths, turn right at the roundabout, pass under the highway, and continue straight towards Borghetto Vara and then Casoni. Follow the signs to the top.
At the top of the pass, turn right to reach the Trattoria dei Cacciatori or continue left towards Montereggio. At the beginning of the descent, take the left turn onto a concrete road leading to the takeoff area. Respect the local farmers' property and work, as there have been past conflicts due to disrespectful behavior from some pilots.
After about 100 meters on the concrete road, continue on a dirt road for approximately 2 kilometers until you reach a small chapel, FOCE DEL TERMINE. Park there as it is the takeoff area. There are two takeoff spots: above the road for weak winds and below the road for strong winds. Both takeoff areas are easy and spacious with a gentle slope. The main wind direction is SSW, but it is also possible to take off with a south wind, though it is more challenging.
Top landing is possible almost anywhere, but always respect the fields and animals, including horses, goats, and cows. The official landing area is to the south near a group of houses. It is an irregularly shaped field, and while the local farmers allow landings, it is crucial to demonstrate respectful behavior. For retrievals, before reaching the top of the pass, take the left turn towards Suvero - Zignago. After about 1 kilometer, past the agriturismo, the road makes a wide left turn where the landing area is located.
In flight, you can find generous thermals both to the right and left of the takeoff. The diverse ground colors help trigger good thermals, which are mainly thermodynamic. To maximize these, fly close to the ridges. Once you gain 100-150 meters, you can explore the valley, where the thermals are generally calmer.
The site is suitable for paragliding and hang gliding. The typical flying season is from spring to September, although conditions tend to decline from July onwards.
For a great meal, visit the I Cacciatori restaurant at the beginning of the road leading to the takeoff. They serve homemade dishes, including bread, and their wild boar is a must-try.
