At an elevation of 2,905 meters and a height difference of 1,300 meters, this paragliding site is considered medium-difficult and is rarely used. It offers a climb-and-fly experience that is spectacular and high-alpine. Enjoyable flights are possible, with some potential for cross-country flying. There are numerous take-off options available, so you can explore and find the best one for yourself.
Located in the Mühlbach Hochkönig region of Austria, the take-off point is at the Matrashaus on the Hochkönig, allowing you to start right from the summit cross. This is a cliff launch.
The Hochkönig, standing at 2,941 meters, is the highest peak in the Berchtesgadener Alps. The main summit, also named Hochkönig, towers over all other mountains within a 34-kilometer radius. With a prominence of 2,181 meters, it is one of the most geographically prominent mountains in the Alps, surpassed only by Mont Blanc, Großglockner, Finsteraarhorn, Wildspitze, and Piz Bernina.
The take-off area provides ample space for layout and launch, followed by a steep wall.
Flight:
This area offers opportunities for long-distance flights. The famous Pinzgauer Spaziergang towards the southwest is nearby and invites cross-country pilots. To the south, Gastein is also an inviting destination. To the northeast, the Tennengebirge with the famous Bischling awaits.
However, reaching the take-off point is a bit of a challenge. The ascent with gear is not to be underestimated. Weather and wind conditions must be carefully studied before the climb. The take-off point at Matrashaus allows little room for error.
You need to be fit and not underestimate the Hochkönig. The hike takes about 5 hours with paragliding gear, and the air gets thinner as you ascend, which should be considered when launching. The reward is a sensational panorama.
