Description
Hochfelln, located in the Bergen region of Germany, offers a take-off altitude of 1635 meters with a height difference of 1115 meters. This site is regularly used and is known for good cross-country (XC) flying potential, although it is not officially recognized.
The take-off direction is south, and it is suitable for both paragliders (GS) and hang gliders (HG). However, pilots must be cautious of the Föhn wind, which can cause sudden and extreme turbulence, posing a significant danger even in seemingly flyable conditions.
Access to the site is available via a cable car or on foot. It is recommended to fly only in weak south winds because the landing zones are in the lee.
Hochfelln is particularly favorable for good OLC (Online Contest) flights in Germany during May and June, often including routes into the Pinzgau region. The mountain is especially attractive for cross-country pilots, with frequent flights reaching Pinzgau and back, thanks to the early thermals available from the east-facing launch site. Even without long-distance flights, the views of the Bavarian plains and the Alps are spectacular. The glide from the north launch site to the landing zone at the valley station is quite long, so timely departure is crucial as emergency landing areas are scarce.
