Conditions Optimales
Description
The Henson Gap site, located in the Southeast US, is a popular paragliding destination known for its thermal soaring and cross-country potential. The takeoff area, known as the 'Flying Camp,' is frequently used and offers a good chance for extended flights.
The site features a NW-facing launch with a world-famous radial ramp. The Burnside paragliding launch, developed on land purchased in 2018, is situated north of the hang gliding launch ramp. Ideal wind direction is 320°, but 280° to 0° is also acceptable. Wind velocity should ideally be between 2-12 mph, with a maximum of 20 mph and gusts up to 8 mph. The elevation at Mean Sea Level (MSL) is 2,280 feet, with an Above Ground Level (AGL) of 1,460 feet. The glide ratio to the landing zone (LZ) is 4:1.
Before flying, pilots must adhere to the Flight Regulatory Program (FRP) requirements, available at the Henson Gap clubhouse and online. Only current Tennessee Tree Topper members with a valid USHPA membership and a Novice (P2) or higher rating are allowed to fly. Novice pilots must have prior mountain flight experience and be briefed by a Director before their first flight. First mountain flights require supervision by a club-authorized observer and radio contact throughout the flight. Tandem and student solo flights must be supervised by a USHPA certified instructor.
Potential hazards include venturi effects in the gap north of the ramp, rapid weather changes, and extremely thermic conditions between noon and 4 pm during spring and summer. Pilots should avoid getting too far behind the ridge to prevent landing in trees.
For launching, pilots should seek a site briefing from an experienced local member or Director. Solid kiting skills are essential, and pilots are advised to practice kiting in the LZ if not current. Launches typically start from the flat area in the middle of the launch area. In light conditions, a forward launch from further back is recommended. Once the glider is flying above, kite towards the launch slope, keeping the glider into the wind. Be prepared to lift off before the end of the flat area if there is much wind. Maintain a torpedo position with brakes off when moving forward towards the slope transition.
Hang glider launches from Burnside are rare and discouraged except for experienced Intermediate (H3) or higher pilots. The ramp offers better clearance in light winds but becomes more dangerous as winds increase.
Pilots should unpack and stage gear along the tree-line, clear launches, and announce their intent before launching. Top landing pilots have the right of way over launching pilots. Spectators should stand by the tree line for viewing. Pilots are reminded to take their trash with them and drive slowly past surrounding homes.
