Description
The Hamberg in the Zillertal region of Austria is a lesser-known but delightful spot for paragliding enthusiasts. This site is particularly favored for its scenic flights rather than its popularity among hikers or paratrekking enthusiasts. The starting point is the mountain inn 'Almluft' at approximately 1200 meters above sea level. To get there, leave the Zillertal expressway at Stumm or Kaltenbach and head towards Gattererberg. The road narrows as you ascend, and you'll find parking at the Almluft inn. With the innkeeper's permission, you can leave your car there.
The hike to the launch site takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The trail follows a forest road with three switchbacks. After the third switchback, a small path branches off to the right, marked by a signpost. This path leads through a spruce forest and past two alpine meadows. Once you reach the tree line, you'll see an avalanche barrier, and just behind it stands the 2095-meter-high Hamberg.
The summit itself is rocky and not suitable for launching, but there are several launch sites just below it. The best launch direction is northwest, which benefits from the valley wind in the afternoon. There are also launch possibilities to the west and south.
Landing options are plentiful in the Zillertal valley, with official landing sites in Hippach and Mayrhofen. If you prefer not to drive up, you can also hike from Uderns or Haselbach, which involves an ascent of about 1550 meters.
