Fiesch, Switzerland, is a premier paragliding destination known for its exceptional cross-country flying opportunities. The launch site is situated at an altitude of 2,158 meters and is easily accessible via a cable car to the mid-station. The take-off area is large and relatively flat, making it ideal for early starts, especially for paragliders. The launch site is oriented southeast, and the best time to fly here is from mid-July to August.
The region's geography is perfect for FAI triangles, with three valleys converging in Visp. The sun hits the southeast slopes towards Grimsel in the morning, is perpendicular to the valley in Sion at noon, and warms the slopes in Saastal in the evening, aiding pilots in their return journey. This unique setup allows for excellent thermals throughout the day without requiring extensive valley crossings.
Fiesch is renowned for its long-distance flights, with many pilots achieving significant distances, particularly in the 200+ km range. The sunny location and the east-west orientation of the valley provide consistent thermals on the southern slopes. However, the area is demanding due to strong thermals and a complex valley wind system, which can be challenging for inexperienced pilots. Thunderstorms and the Grimsel wind are additional hazards to be aware of.
The landing zone in Fiesch is tricky due to the convergence of three valley wind directions, causing the windsock to change direction frequently and with considerable wind strength.
