Description
The main launch site is located at an altitude of 1680 meters and is extremely popular, especially for cross-country (XC) flights. The best time for XC flights is in spring, particularly in April and May.
Flights in this region have impressive records, with one site achieving a distance of 106.8 km and another reaching 177.7 km.

The best season to fly here is from January to May. The terrain above Fanas is interesting and becomes thermally active early in the year once the snow on the southern slopes has melted. You can reach the launch site by taking a cable car from Fanas, which takes about 10 minutes from the mountain station. Note that the cable car has limited capacity, so it's advisable to book in advance. The ride costs 16 Swiss Francs (as of January 2011). The launch site is located above the mountain station and faces south, but in winter, launches are often made from the ridge facing north. Landing is in the valley floor, where a windsock is available. For those who enjoy Walk & Fly, you can hike further up to the Sasauna summit for additional elevation gain.
Fanas is a relatively sheltered and scenic flying area, located at the entrance to Prättigau. It offers excellent thermal and cross-country flying opportunities, especially in spring and often in autumn.

This area is a top XC destination in spring, particularly from April to May. Flights to Arlberg, Innsbruck, Bozen, Liechtenstein, and the Rhine Valley are possible. FAIs of 200-240 km can often be achieved from the end of April. Earlier in the year, there is too much snow behind Klosters and in the Vorder Rhine Valley, and later in the year, the stagnant air from Lake Constance and the Rhine Valley suppresses thermal activity.
The infrastructure for flying is optimal, except for the small cable car. If you have to wait at the valley station, you can enjoy a snack on the terrace of Gasthaus Alpina. If you are already at the mountain station and find the thermals still weak, you can enjoy the sun at the Sassauna mountain restaurant and watch the paragliders who have already launched.
