Description
Elm, located in the Sernftal valley, is renowned as a ski resort and for the unique Martinsloch, a natural rock window through which the sun shines directly onto the village church at the beginning of spring and autumn. The surrounding mountains include Piz Sardona, Hausstock, Vorab, and Kärpf.
The 'Schabell' above Elm is a notable paragliding peak. In winter, it is more accessible due to the ski lifts, which almost reach the summit.
For flights, the Schabell area offers ideal launch sites both in summer and winter, accessible via gondola and ski lift. The thermals over Ämpächli provide extended flight times, although they don't carry you far.
When approaching for landing, be cautious of the cables. Each year, a few pilots collide with them. The height above the ground is particularly dangerous, as falling from 10 meters can be severe. There is another cable on the opposite side of the landing area, which crosses the road and ends in the forest.
Local pilots are happy to offer tips. If it's your first time flying here or if you feel uncertain, listening to the information provided by local flight schools (Flyy, Robair) can be helpful. These schools sometimes conduct training in Elm.
The local paragliding club, Gleitschirmklub Glarnerland, is also available to assist you. More information can be found on their website: [Gleitschirmklub Glarnerland](http://www.gkg.ch/).
For transportation, take the gondola from Elm to Ämpächli. From the top station, follow the road to the left for about 300 meters. The summer operation of the gondola runs until November 1st. More details can be found at [Sportbahnen Elm](http://www.sportbahnenelm.ch). The hike to the launch site takes approximately 90 minutes.
