Conditions Optimales
Description
The Diedamskopf in Schoppernau, Austria, is a popular paragliding site known for its excellent year-round thermal flying conditions and some cross-country (XC) opportunities. The site offers a variety of launch points along the ridge and lower down, including a hang gliding ramp for southward launches.
The main launch sites are located above the mountain station near the radio tower, with additional launch points at the Diedams Plateau and the mid-station. Due to its southern orientation, the site becomes thermally active early in the year, with strong thermal connections towards Kleinwalsertal, Lechtal, and Arlberg.
In late winter and spring, flights over the adjacent Falzerkopf and Üntschenspitze are possible, marking the first steps towards cross-country flying. The Mittagsfluh works well with south to southeast winds, while other flights offer stunning views over Au and Schoppernau.
However, summer flying can be challenging due to valley winds from Bezau, which can disrupt the experience. In such cases, Andelsbuch/Niedere is a better alternative. Pilots must also be cautious of weather changes, high-altitude winds, and high-voltage power lines near the landing zone.
The Diedamskopf is also a prime winter flying destination. However, launching from ski slopes is prohibited during winter, and pilots must adhere to designated flight corridors and maintain a minimum altitude of 300 meters to avoid disturbing wildlife.
For hang gliders, the upper launch site is about 300 meters from the cable car, requiring a 30-40 minute carry. The lower ramps, located 250 meters below the cable car, also require carrying the glider. Note that the right ramp is weathered and dangerous, and the left ramp, although newer, is also in poor condition. Both ramps lack wind indicators, and pilots must bring a snow shovel in winter to clear the launch area.
The Bregenzerwald Card offers free access to public transport and cable cars in the region for stays of three nights or more. Paragliders can enjoy a free first cable car ride of the day with the Bregenzerwald Guest Card at Andelsbuch, Bezau, or Diedamskopf. The card also provides free entry to swimming pools and discounts at various partner establishments.
