Description

Castle Peak in California offers a medium-difficult paragliding experience with a launch height of 2721 meters and a height difference of approximately 600 meters. This site is rarely used and is known for thermal soaring and some cross-country potential. Pilots often launch from one of the gullies above the cliffs on the south side of Castle Peak. Be cautious of rocks and line-snagging plants in this area. The thermals above the cliffs can be strong and turbulent, even on days with high cirrus clouds, so ensure you maintain plenty of ground clearance. There is an interesting convergence zone above I-80, just south of Andesite Peak. Pilots have landed in meadows near Serene Lakes, which is convenient if you are staying nearby. The site has potential for cross-country flights, especially heading north or northwest with the predominant winds. Thermals tend to start early in the morning, but it can get quite windy later in the day.
