Description
Butser Hill, with an approximate height of 175 meters, is a local soaring site exclusive to members of the Sky Surfing Club (SSC) or clubs with a Reciprocal Agreement with SSC. Visitors and guests are not permitted to fly here.
The hill features multiple bowls and faces, offering good bottom landing options and accommodating various wind directions. However, due to its complex shape, it is not ideal for ridge lift or thermals. On a reasonable thermal day, sea breezes can disrupt conditions by early afternoon. Suitable wind directions include West, North, North East, and South.
Butser Hill is part of the Queen Elizabeth II Country Park. The site is managed under a formal agreement between SSC and Hampshire County Council, allowing for hang gliding and paragliding activities. The hill is also popular with walkers, kite fliers, and aeromodellers, so pilots must be exceptionally considerate to avoid conflicts.
Access to Butser Hill is from the south, traveling north on the A3(M). Turn off at the Clanfield signpost, bear right at the slip "T" junction, and follow National Trust signs to Butser Hill. At the roundabout, turn left at Hog’s Lodge pub, then right and uphill at the narrow lane, and right at the "X" roads to reach the pay car park.
Parking requires a ticket, and non-ticketed cars will be fined. Unload in the parking area and carry your gear to the relevant flying slope. Be aware that the area is targeted by thieves, so do not leave valuables in your car. The car park closes to incoming vehicles after 8:00 pm.
Rules for the site include parking only in designated areas and keeping dogs under control, especially since the hilltop and slopes are grazed by sheep at various times. Any mess must be cleaned up.
