Description
Bukowiec is a mountain located on the border of the Wałbrzyskie and Suche Mountains. Its name comes from the large number of beech trees covering its slopes, especially the southern part. The peak stands at 900 meters above sea level, but the take-off point is slightly lower. This flying site is near the village of Unisław Śląski, along the road from Unisław to Rybnica Leśna. Note that this road is not cleared of snow in winter, so you may need to walk about 400 meters to the summer parking area. In winter, park your car near the intersection in the village.
The best flying conditions at Bukowiec are with a north-west wind (NW 315°), and the flyable wind range is between 300° and 330°. For the shelf below Bukowiec, the ideal wind is from the north (N 0°), with deviations up to 35° in either direction.
The elevation difference of Bukowiec itself is about 180 meters, and the height difference to the landing site at the parking area is around 250 meters. You can also land on the top of the shelf and either hike back up or glide down to the parking area. Important: Cars must be parked along the road next to the landing site. Do not drive onto the meadow, as it is private property. The farmer allows it to be used as a landing site for free but does not permit driving on it. When landing, you must touch down and pack up only on the right side of the path (looking down from the shelf) leading from the road to the shelf. Following these rules will ensure continued access to this beautiful area.
Bukowiec offers both thermal and ridge soaring opportunities. Several flights of several kilometers towards Głuszyca and Nowa Ruda have been recorded here. The peak requires intermediate skills due to the relatively small take-off area and steep slope. However, the shelf is suitable for beginners and can be used for training.
To get there by car from Wałbrzych, turn left at the first intersection in Unisław onto road 380 towards Rybnica Leśna and Głuszyca. A paragliding shop is located a few dozen meters from the intersection on the right side towards Mieroszów. Drive up about 400 meters, and you will be next to the lower landing site (do not drive onto it!). From here, you can clearly see the shelf and the upper take-off point.
If traveling by train, take the international route from Wałbrzych Miasto to Mezimesti, departing daily at 8:22 AM, with a travel time of about 40 minutes. From Unisław Śląski station, walk to the road visible below (about 150 meters), turn left, and continue to the marked intersection, where you turn right and head to the landing site about 400 meters away.
You can also reach the site by bus from Wałbrzych or a private carrier departing from the opposite side of the PKS station (next to the OSIR hall). Get off at the first stop in Unisław Śląski and walk back to the intersection. Follow the directions as described above.
