Description

The Brienzer Rothorn, standing at 2277 meters, is occasionally used for paragliding with some potential for cross-country flights. To reach the launch site, take the cable car from Sörenberg (Schönenboden) to the Brienzer Rothorn. From there, follow the ridge to the launch site. Note that the launch site is hilly, uneven, and very exposed, making it suitable only for experienced pilots. If you plan to fly towards Interlaken, you must maintain at least 300 meters of altitude above the launch site. Flying beyond the summit restaurant with less altitude is not permitted. Alternatively, you can reach the Brienzer Rothorn from Brienz or Sörenberg. From the cogwheel train's mountain station, follow the hiking trail towards Schongütsch to the launch site. The flight offers a nostalgic scenic experience, especially when flying over the lake. The cogwheel steam train from Brienz takes about an hour. Autumn is ideal due to reliable thermals, while summer can be weather-dependent. In winter, the updrafts are particularly convincing. A summit launch is worth trying, but conditions must be just right. Be aware of the KOSIF regulations and the TMAs and CTRs (Meiringen and Alpnach). The danger area LS-D6 Axalp is used for military shooting exercises. The Meiringen CTR operates Monday to Friday from 07:30 to 12:05 and 13:15 to 17:05. The Alpnach TMA sectors 4 and 6 also fall within the flight area. There are specific protection zones within the flight area, particularly the Brienzergrat. Agreements have been made to avoid disturbing the wildlife, especially during the birthing season of chamois and ibex from early April to the end of June. Flights over the Augstmatthorn and Tannhorn areas are prohibited from Monday to Friday during this period. A new launch site regulation at Brienzer Rothorn aims to improve the habitat for the local wildlife. The S4 launch site is crucial for flights towards Sörenberg but can disturb the wildlife grazing on the southern slopes. Therefore, pilots are advised to fly straight after takeoff, gain altitude along the southern ridge, and turn east as soon as possible without circling or scratching in the southern flank. The launch site at Brienzer Rothorn is oriented southwest and is difficult. It is located at an altitude of 2260 meters and can be accessed via a cable car. The coordinates are 8.03583588, 46.7880547, and it takes about 5 minutes to walk from the cogwheel train's mountain station to the launch site, which is a steep meadow.
