Bolean is a paragliding site located in the Okanagan region of Canada, known for its excellent cross-country (XC) potential. The site is situated 40 km west of Vernon, off Highway 97, and 1 km east of Falkland in the Okanagan Valley, South Central British Columbia.
The launch elevation is 5000 feet above sea level, with the landing zone (LZ) at 2000 feet above sea level. The site is suitable for both hang gliding (HG) and paragliding (PG), with specific launch directions for each: HG launches are best from the south to southeast, while PG launches are from the southwest.
The site is primarily used for thermal soaring, and XC flights are possible. It can be very thermal and turbulent, making it suitable only for advanced pilots, especially from late spring through summer. A recent SIV course and chute repack are highly recommended due to the site's intense conditions.
Access to the launch requires a 4WD or a high-clearance 2WD vehicle with good low gear, as the road can be challenging. Logging activities in the area may affect road conditions, so it's advisable to check current access status.
The launch area features a natural grassy slope, with some trees nearby. The primary landing zone is a bomb-out field below the launch, which slopes downhill and can be tricky for hang gliders. Paragliders may land in a designated field in the north-center of Falkland Townsite, with prior permission from the landowner.
Flying is best from late morning to 5 PM, but conditions can turn catabatic around 5:30 PM. The site is known for its big air and rapid development of towering cumulus clouds, making it a favorite for competitions. However, it is not suitable for intermediate pilots during the summer unless carefully supervised.
