Be cautious of strong thermal conditions in the spring. The landing zone is directly in the village above the church and is easily identifiable from the air by the windsock. The valley wind blows from the east. Cross-country flight routes are possible towards the east in the direction of Matrei and further into the Pustertal. To the west, you can fly over the Defreggental and the Staller Sattel into the Antholzertal. Starting point: Direct ascent via Bichl or Hinterbichl, which are part of the Prägraten am Großvenediger area. The hut is part of the Venediger Höhenweg, so you can also start from Wallhorn via the Bodenalm and/or Eisseehütte to reach the hut from the east. Gentle thermals often allow for hours of flying, even for novice pilots. The flying season at Vordere Niedere runs from May to October. Andelsbuch, a well-known location among pilots, offers launch sites in all directions. The Bregenzerwald-Card provides a free first mountain ride per day for stays of three nights or more. Note that there is a no-fly rule after 7 PM. The Niedere flying area between Bezau and Andelsbuch is serviced by two cable cars: a chairlift from Andelsbuch and a gondola from Bezau. It offers good thermals in late winter and spring, making it a busy spot on weekends. The Andelsbuch side is a summer flying haven from April to September, with launch directions from west to northeast. The Bezau side is suitable for winter flying or early morning summer flights, from September to April, with a south-facing launch direction. On a beautiful weekend, up to 100 paragliders can be in the air simultaneously. Unfortunately, there have been fatal accidents due to collisions. The Bezau launch site faces south, with options to start near the Baumgarten mountain station or after a 15-minute hike on the Niedere. The launch area is accessible from March 31 to October 30 for both hang gliders and paragliders. The launch site is about a 6-minute walk from the Steinerhaus parking lot and approximately 15 minutes from Rosemialm. The Stoderzinken mountain is one of the premier flying locations in the Ennstal region. Access to the launch sites is via a toll road. Hang gliders can start from a wooden ramp facing south after a short walk from the Steinerhaus parking lot. Other launch sites are located near the summit and require about a 30-minute hike. The Peter Rosegger south launch site (S, SW) is particularly noted for its excellent morning thermals. The ascent from the first parking lot at Rosemialm, where you can also enjoy a good breakfast, is especially charming and takes about 15 minutes to reach the Peter Rosegger launch site. The Stoderzinken flying area is exclusively leased by the Sky Club Austria for its flight school operations and club members. From there, it's easy to return to the Alpbachtal landing site. Another option is to fly over the large sewage plant to the next valley wind slope at Larchkopf above Strass and soar again. Cross-country: In the afternoon, the U-shaped valley wind route over Reitherkogel and Larchkopf into Zillertal up to Uderns is relatively easy (flight path approx. 15-20km). With an early start and east wind, Alpbach is a good starting point for flights over the ridge to Zillertal, along Kreuzjoch, and further into Pinzgau. In the afternoon, from around 1 PM, there is often downdraft or crosswind at the Hensler launch site. Spring thermals are characteristic of this area. However, even at the end of summer and in autumn, Schnifnerberg offers good thermal and cross-country flying opportunities. Schnifis is a beautiful flying area for southern winds, but launches are also possible with west winds. After flying, you can land in Schnifner Ried and practice ground handling. Cross-country flights can be made in various directions. To the south, Switzerland beckons, and the Rhine Valley calls from the west. The best routes are towards Montafon and Arlberg.
