Dadaepo Beach

Kite map of

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean, River Mouth

Water type: Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Water is shallow a long way out. This spot has small chop and wind-generated waves that roll into the beach. The river mouth has many sand bars yet to be explored for kiting.

Beach type & size: Sand - Big

Infos: The beach is extremely spacious and safe for launching. Perfect place to kite buggy or landboard. The beach is located at the mouth of the Nakdong River, which makes for very fine sand and silt.

Identified hazards: None

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: Wetsuit is required from mid-October until early-May.

Wind specificities: Southeast Korea has three main wind directions - SW (usually spring through fall, but very light in the summer); NE (usually spring and fall); NW (usually winter). This beach works well with S, SW, and NW (also N and W) winds. The winter NW winds are the strongest winds and should be ridden right at the river mouth between the main beach and the sand bars. Bring big kites for S/SW winds: 14 to 20 sqm; smaller for NW winds: 10 to 16 sqm. Due to the shape of the beach and the many sand bars, one can find side and side/onshore riding areas at different locations around the spot.

Best months: January, February, March, April, May, September, October, November, December

Access description: by Car - From Gimhae airport cross the Nakdong River to the east side, then take the highway and follow the river all the way down to the river mouth at Dadaepo Beach.

Specific rules: None

Extra: This is the kitesurfer's beach for southeast Korea. It has all the ingredients - large safe launch, shallow water, decent wind September to May. See Sinyang Beach, Cheju Island for better kiting (1 hour flight from here). Be prepared to go to Jinha following a kite session here, as SW winds are usually followed by NE winds in the spring and fall. South winds are for Dadaepo; NE winds are for Jinha and Pohang.

Nightlife: Karaoke bars and Korean BBQ with Soju. Locals are very friendly and extremely curious about kitesurfing.

Sinyang Beach

Kite map of

Level: Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Flat, Chop

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Water depth ranges from 0.5-2 meters, depending on tide. The water is quite flat due to the bay and breakwaters.

Beach type & size: Sand - Medium

Infos: Sandy beach, quite long, but only about 30 meters wide. There are power lines about 50 meters from water for length of beach. Lava rock formations are present at each end of the beach, so kiters must stay well upwind and away from these obstacles.

Identified hazards: Rocks, Power lines

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: Cheju island has four distinct seasons. Highs around 33C in summer and lows around 1C in winter. Wetsuit is required from October until May. Too cold for kiting in January and February.

Wind type: Trade

Wind specificities: Cheju Island is known around Korea as being a windy place. It's best winds are during the fall and spring seasons (typically NW or NE winds, sometimes SW) with winds ranging from 15 to 30 knots - many days (maybe 2 or 3 days a week). Summer winds are lighter 10 to 18 knots (mostly from the SW), but only place in summer for wind in all of Korea. Sinyang Beach works best on South winds (souths are strongest here).

Best months: March, April, August, September

Access description: by Car - Fly into Cheju City from Korea (Seoul, Pusan, or Jinju) or Japan, or take the ferry from several ports on the mainland. Flight is best option as it only takes 50 minutes for $130 round trip and no kite baggage fees. From airport, take rental car or taxi ($20) 1 hour east, or bus ($3) for 1.5 hours to Seongsan. Sinyang is a small sleepy town just south of Seongsan in a bay opening up to the south winds. The kitesurf/windsurf beach is not the town's main beach, it is on the east side of the bay - look for the two flags in the sand dunes.

Specific rules: None

Extra: Helmet is necessary as there are the lava rock formations at each end of the beach. General rule of thumb is that if it is a south wind head to Sinyang, if it is a north wind head to Hyeopje.

Nightlife: Karaoke bars and Korean BBQ with Soju. Locals are very friendly.

Jinha Beach

Kite map of

Level: Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Flat, Chop, Small wave

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Water gets gradually deeper. Water here is colder than at Dadaepo due too deeper open ocean water. This spot has small chop and wind-generated waves. Water is flatter near the small island, which shelters the water.

Infos: I has a 2 km white sand beach. This beach was chosen to house the Korean Windsurfing Association. Jinha is the last tour stop (end-May) for the Asian Windsurfing Tour.

Identified hazards: None

Beachgoer: None

Weather specificities: Wetsuit is recommended from October until late-May.

Wind specificities: Southeast Korea has three main wind directions - SW (usually spring through fall, but very light in the summer); NE (usually spring and fall); NW (usually winter). This beach works best with NE winds which are very common in the spring and fall (especially the months of May and October). Winds of 8 to 20 knots. Bring medium/big kites - 14m to 20m. Further north on the beach closer to the island NE will be sideshore.

Best months: March, April, May, September, October, November

Access description: by Car - From either Ulsan or Pusan, Jinha is accessible via highway 7 and then 31.

Specific rules: None

Extra: North of here, Pohang and Chilpo Beach are other alternatives for NE winds, but winds are generally stronger as you go south.

Hyeopje Beach

Kite map of

Level: Intermediate, Expert

Type: Ocean

Water type: Shallow, Flat, Chop, Small wave

Water hazards: Rocks

Water quality: Clean

Infos: Water is quite shallow and gets gradually deeper as you get past the small waves. At high tide, there is lots of shallow flat water to ride in, between the rock formations. This spot has very flat clear water close to the beach and small chop as you get out. Waves are generated by wind.

Beach type & size: Sand - Tidal

Infos: Beach is white sand and very clean. There are many lava rock formations at both ends of the beach. The tide determines the launch. Low tide is the safest. At high tide, rider must walk through knee deep water away from rock areas.

Identified hazards: Rocks

Beachgoer: None

It's best winds are during the fall and spring seasons (typically NW or NE winds, sometimes SW) with winds ranging from 15-30 knots - many days (maybe 2 or 3 days a week) using 10-14 meter kites. Summer winds are lighter 10-18 knots (mostly from the SW), but only place in summer for wind in all of Korea. Hyeopje is the windiest spot on the island and the best for all north winds. Onshore NNW.

Best months: March, April, May, September, October, November

Access description: by Car - Fly into Cheju City from Korea (Seoul, Pusan, or Jinju) or Japan, or take the ferry from several ports on the mainland. From airport, take rental car or taxi ($20) 45 minutes west to Hyeopje Beach, or bus ($3) for 1 hour to Hallim Park bus stop. Hyeopje is a small village near Hallim. Hyeopje Beach is a very beautiful beach facing a small island offshore - look for the large statues of the 'Tol-Harubang' or 'Stone Grand Father' lining the length of the beach.

Specific rules: None

Extra: Helmet is a good idea as there are many lava rock formations near the beach. General rule of thumb is that if it is a south wind head to Sinyang, if it is a north wind head to Hyeopje.
