The launch site is located above Lake Walen, at an altitude of approximately 2300 meters. This area is known for its strong thermals on the south side, which can sometimes be turbulent. The scenery along the southern cliffs is breathtaking. The launch area is a moderately steep meadow about 100 meters below the ridge. It can be accessed by a marked mountain path, with a 10-minute walk from the mountain station. The terrain is challenging, especially without snow, as it is very rugged and rocky. In winter, it is easier to navigate. Be cautious of strong south winds, as they may indicate a Föhn wind. Launch Site Details: - Altitude: 2293 meters - Orientation: North, South - Difficulty: Difficult - Coordinates: 9.307176, 47.154835 - Access: Funicular and cable car, followed by a 10-minute walk - Launch window: All year round (check the cable car schedule) - Transport: Funicular and cable car. Depending on the launch site, an additional 20-minute walk may be required. The launch sites are generally demanding, with some having very short runways. Do not attempt to launch with insufficient wind. In summer, thermal rotors can form on the southwest edge. Avoid launching during Föhn conditions. Wildlife Protection: No flying at the east launch site from May 14 to June 14. Fees: A voluntary start/landing fee of 5 CHF per day is requested. This fee includes a free descent by cable car in bad weather. If the fee is not paid, the descent must be paid separately. The Chäserrugg is a challenging flying area. However, when conditions are favorable, it offers one of the most beautiful flying experiences. The view of the Säntis, the entire Alpstein, and Lake Walen is unparalleled.
