Description
Vetchies Reef - Durban Beachfront
Vetchies Reef features a right-breaking, hollow wave over a rocky reef, with depths of 9 meters transitioning to 1-1.2 meters at the takeoff. This spot works best at high tide, particularly during rising tide conditions, and is primarily surfed on large South swells, typically in winter. The wave can reach heights of 1.2 to 1.5 meters, offering thrilling barrels, especially at the 'Pinnacle' section.
Located at the extreme south end of the Durban Beachfront, Vetchies Reef is accessible via a short walk from the Marine Lifesaving Club or by paddling from the Harbor's North Pier. The wave is known for its impressive barrels and fun walls, but caution is advised due to the presence of sharp rocks, urchins, and potential shark activity. While it can get crowded, it remains less busy than other local spots, allowing for a more enjoyable session. Ideal conditions require careful attention to swell and wind direction, making it a favorite for experienced surfers seeking a challenge.
