Description

Williams Peak is a mountain flying site located in the scenic Blue River valley, approximately 23 miles north of Silverthorne, Colorado. It offers sweeping views of the rugged Gore Range and the beautiful Green Mountain Reservoir. The site features a variety of launch locations and drive-up access, making it suitable for different skill levels. The lower launch at Williams Peak, situated at an elevation of 9450 ft, is accessed via a short footpath through the woods off the Williams Peak road. This launch is most reliable in the afternoon when valley winds typically shift to the west or northwest. The launch area is small, accommodating only one glider at a time, and streamers are placed around the vicinity to help pilots gauge wind conditions. Special attention should be paid to the streamer located to the NNW along the road, as it can indicate potential rotor off the ridge in that direction. The lower launch requires a 6.4:1 glide to reach the Postage Stamp LZ, which can be challenging in typical afternoon and evening winds. There is a bailout LZ at the base of the Dinosaur, but it is small and requires strong spot landing skills. Landing along the Williams Peak road is also an option but can be difficult due to a steep downhill grade and occasional traffic. Williams Peak is primarily a thermalling site, with ideal launch aspects being S-W-NW depending on the chosen launch. Valley wind conditions are common, with a south to southwest wind in the morning switching to a west to northwest flow as the day progresses. The prime flying months are from April to October, generally when the road is dry enough to drive. Winter flights are possible but may require sled or hiking access only. The main LZ is a large grassy field located 2.8 miles south of the Williams Peak road, accessed via a pull-out loop on the NE side of HW 9. This LZ is huge, relatively level, and largely obstacle-free, making it a good option for beginners. However, it can become quite thermic later in the day, so caution is advised.
