Description
Located in the Mals/Burgeis region of Italy, this paragliding site offers an elevation of 1730 meters with a height difference of 660 meters. It is frequently used and known for good cross-country (XC) flying potential. The best time for long-distance flights is from late March to mid-May, although the site is accessible year-round.
The take-off area is a simple, good-quality meadow next to a pilot-friendly hotel, which may be closed during the off-season, such as in April. There are two take-off options:
1. Near Hotel 'Watles' (also suitable for top landing): Coordinates N46.70076 E10.50488, at 1750 meters.
2. From the gondola at Watles to 'Pfaffensee': Coordinates N46.71188 E10.49641, at 2230 meters.
The launch site is part of the Gasthof Watles, which is recommended and allows for top landing. Mals is known as the sunniest place in South Tyrol, providing excellent thermal conditions as early as late March. Pilots can reach altitudes over 3500 meters and enjoy scenic flights extending to the Ötztal Alps, Ortler Group, and along the entire Vinschgau Valley.
However, caution is advised during north winds, especially the North Föhn, as the valley wind system from the south can be quite strong.
For more information on the gondola service, visit [Watles Gondola](http://www.watles.net). The gondola operates in both summer and winter, though not always consistently in summer.
