Conditions Optimales
Description
Varbergs Fortress is an advanced coastal soaring site, ideal for experienced pilots seeking a unique challenge. The best wind direction for flying here is from the west-northwest (V-NW), although south-southwest (S-SV) conditions are also manageable.
To start, you can either launch from the small hill where the walls converge or from the top of the wall north of the 'basin'. For the hill launch, balance your wing as much as possible and take a leap near the bushes and small trees to gain altitude. Alternatively, lay out your wing slightly southwest (SV) on the wall and pull up from there. Once airborne, the ridge lift is strong, making it easy to gain height. The site offers stunning views and often attracts a lot of spectators.
Parking is available either near the beach in the harbor if flying V-NW, or around the castle on the other side for S-SV conditions.
The site requires a Pilot 2 license and is best suited for those with good ridge soaring experience. The launch area is in front of the wall, and landing is typically done at the same spot. Be cautious, as the launch requires a wind speed of about 5 m/s to ensure a safe takeoff. If the lift is insufficient, you may face a challenging downwind landing or, in some cases, a water landing if you manage to steer towards the sea.
