Description
Te Maire, located in Dargaville, New Zealand, offers a unique and occasionally challenging paragliding experience. The site is known for its fabulous coastal cross-country potential, although it is generally easier for hang gliders than paragliders, especially in strong winds.
The ridge at Te Maire stretches 80 km, with varying terrain and conditions. The majority of the ridge is similar to Kariotahi but slightly lower. The ends of the ridge, however, present more challenges and are suited for advanced pilots. A South West wind is required, similar to Kariotahi.
The primary takeoff point is at Te Maire Beach Rd, 4 km south of Glinks Gully. This location is a 200 km, 2½ hour drive north of the Harbour Bridge and 25 km south of Dargaville. While landing out is uncommon if conditions are monitored closely, retrieval options are available.
For hang gliders, the safest takeoff with direct public road access is Te Maire Rd. A 4WD vehicle is needed to reach the takeoff, although a 2WD can get within 400 m. The takeoff is 120 ft high and suitable for novice pilots. The rigging area is flat and grassy.
Paragliders can launch at various points along the ridge, but the difficulty increases further south of Glinks Gully. Wind speed typically increases by a few knots south of the Te Maire takeoff. The longest glider flight south from Te Maire is 24 km, after which the ridge becomes un-soarable bush.
Retrieval can be challenging, especially if you land out. It's advisable to make yourself visible and head to the beach quickly to increase your chances of getting a lift. Carry essential items like mobile numbers, water, food, and a radio for communication.
Mobile coverage is limited, with good coverage at the T intersection at the top of Glink's Road and patchy coverage south of the takeoff. Inland retrieval is difficult due to the terrain, while beach retrieval is generally better.
The beach is driveable with a 2WD in the right conditions, but be cautious of soft sand and tidal restrictions. The beach is frequented by fishermen, especially in summer.
North of Te Maire, the wind is typically lighter, and the longest flight north is 56 km. The cliffs are similar to Kariotahi but lower. Settlements along the ridge include Glink's Gully, Mahuta Gap, Bayly's Beach, Omarmari, and Aranga. Retrieval north of the Bluff is difficult, and mobile coverage is patchy.
