Description
The Seekarspitze is located on the western side of Lake Achensee in Austria. The starting point for the hike is either the campsite on the northern shore of the lake or a parking area in the forest on the northwest side. The trail follows a forest road up to the Seekaralm at 1500 meters above sea level. From the Seekaralm, a clearly marked path heads first southeast and then southwest along the northeast ridge of the Seekarspitze. The elevation gain is approximately 1150 meters, and the hike takes about 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 hours.
The launch site is about 50 meters south of the summit and is suitable for westward launches only. There is no official landing site at Lake Achensee, but from mid to late May, you can usually find a mowed meadow somewhere for landing.
However, the launch site requires caution. Around midday, thermals can come from both the east and west sides of the mountain, and valley winds also start around this time, putting the launch site in the lee. This wind condition is not always apparent from the launch site and only becomes evident once airborne. Therefore, the best time for this tour is in the autumn when the valley wind is moderate or absent.
