Description
Sagebrush is a frequently used paragliding site known for good thermal soaring and the potential for cross-country flights. It is a P4 site, meaning it is suitable only for experienced pilots. Guest pilots must strictly follow the rules.
Located in the Sierra Nevada region of the USA, Sagebrush has a site record of 84.5 km. The launch area is best suited for winds from the west, with acceptable winds from the southwest to northwest. The ideal wind speed for launch is between 10 to 13 mph, with a maximum of 16 mph, including gusts. The glide ratio to the roadside landing zone (LZ) is 1:3.3 in zero wind.
Sagebrush is an inland thermal site with no coastal influence, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Unauthorized use of this site is strictly prohibited. New members must fly with a seasoned local pilot who understands the conditions. This site is not suitable for beginners, and solo flying is not allowed.
Before flying at Sagebrush, pilots must complete a mandatory process:
1. Contact a site administrator to schedule an introduction. You must be a P4 rated pilot and a current member of the USHPA.
2. Study all the information provided in the site guide.
3. Complete the Release Waiver and the online ARFF Registration Form. Pay the $100 annual membership fee. Bring a hard copy of the site waiver for the introduction.
The primary LZ is tight with trees lining the south side and experiences strong thermal activity during late spring, summer, and early fall. During summer, it is recommended to avoid the primary LZ and aim for Henningsen Lotus Park or other cross-country landing zones.
The midsize field marked in red and labeled Bacchi’s is private property, and landing there is strictly prohibited. The area east of Bacchi’s property houses exotic birds, so pilots should avoid flying over this area.
