The Ruegig area is known for its excellent thermal conditions, making it a worthwhile destination throughout the year. The landscape is impressive, and the site offers significant potential for long-distance flights. From Bürglen, take the cable car to Ruegig, and from there, it's a 10-minute walk to the lower launch site.
Historically, the official landing site was a small meadow near a restaurant, which was unsuitable due to thermal conditions. Now, a new landing site has been established, and a landing fee may be required. Ensure to choose a mowed area for landing.
For flights, reliable thermals can be found at Hüenderregg. Alternatively, you can fly along the slope towards Altdorf and utilize the local thermals. Typically, pilots gain altitude at the first hill and can then cross towards Klausenpass or the southern cliffs.
Pilots should be well-informed about the numerous cables in the Schächental area. Staying near the cable car route is simpler, with fewer obstacles. Around Ruegig, there are known hay cables near the second-highest mast and above the launch site.
When flying towards Fluelen, stay close to the slope to avoid strong headwinds in the valley. The launch is straightforward, but be mindful of valley winds during landing. Generally, land on the opposite side of the valley station to avoid cables.
For soaring, the launch can be made towards the West or South. Soaring is easy on both sides of the valley, depending on the wind direction. With sufficient altitude, reaching the slopes on the other side of the valley is manageable.
