Description
Pizzo Calabro, Italy
This site, located in Pizzo Calabro, offers an alternative takeoff point at an elevation of 367 meters. It is occasionally used for soaring and coastal cross-country flights. Due to its proximity to the sea, the area often experiences remarkable thermals and thermodynamic conditions, especially with changing winds and a west breeze.
When the wind at the takeoff point reaches 10 km/h, pilots can usually maintain altitude, and sometimes even gain height over the sea. The moderately steep takeoff area is situated directly above Pizzo and is equipped with a carpet that can accommodate a single paraglider. Strong wind conditions require good launch techniques to avoid the risk of the glider being blown into the trees above. In the absence of wind, the takeoff area is too short, making it challenging to reach the landing zone on the right.
Top landing is possible approximately 300 meters to the right of the takeoff direction, near the antennas in a grassy area.
Permission is required to fly here. Contact Pietro Pandolfo at Tel. 0968/25478.
Directions:
- Drive through Pizzo on SS 18 towards Vibo Valentina until you reach km 429.4 (end of the town).
- Turn towards Maierato and follow the winding road up to the plateau, passing under the highway.
- At the picnic area, take the narrow road up to the left and follow it. The road is accessible by motorhome. Park before the small forest.
- Walk straight down the forest path towards the sea. If the ground is wet, it is advisable to walk the few meters through the forest to avoid getting stuck.
