Description

The paragliding site at Silvaplana, Switzerland, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for seasoned pilots. Located at an altitude of 3260-3300 meters, this site is known for its flat terrain on a glacier, making it a popular choice for cross-country (XC) flights. The site is relatively well-used and provides numerous take-off options depending on the season and weather conditions. Access to the take-off area requires a short walk from the mountain station to the glacier. Flights in this region have reached impressive distances, with the site record standing at 106.8 km. The take-off area is situated on a moderately steep, short snowfield, accessible via the Corvatsch cable car from Surlej. The coordinates for the take-off point are 9.82179514, 46.41601121, and it takes approximately 10 minutes to walk there from the cable car station. Optimal wind direction for this site is from the North to Northeast. During the summer, the take-off area is located below the mountain station on the glacier. Note that landing in unmown meadows is prohibited from June 1st until the hay harvest. However, there are regularly mown fields near the sports center in Silvaplana, which are suitable for landing. Be cautious of wind shear from the Julier wind if you choose to land on this side of the lake. In winter, the take-off area remains below the mountain station on the glacier, with the launch site positioned next to the ski slope. General information to keep in mind includes the fact that the main valley serves as the approach and departure zone for Engadin Airport. For detailed airspace regulations, refer to the Engadin airspace graphic. If encountering Julier wind, it is recommended to land in Sils, near the Furtschellasbahn valley station. Additionally, during the thermal season, the Malojawind typically picks up in the main valley from midday onwards.
