Conditions Optimales
Description
The Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf, Germany, is one of the most popular paragliding sites in the country, renowned for its challenging and high-alpine terrain in the Allgäu Alps. This site is highly frequented and offers excellent cross-country (XC) flying opportunities.
Flying is permitted only during the summer operation or in winter when there are no official ski operations. Only paragliders are allowed.
Important: Below the terrace launch site, there is a hiking trail. Therefore, launching from this site is only allowed with the assistance of a launch director, who is chosen by the present pilots. The launch director must ensure that no third party is endangered in the launch and flight area. If no launch director is available, each pilot is responsible for ensuring that no one is endangered during the launch (waiting for pedestrians to pass, choosing a visible launch and flight area, etc.). Pedestrians have the right of way.
Region: Oberstdorf, Germany. Site record: 168.7 km.

The Nebelhorn summit area includes all launch sites accessible by the summit cable car. These are located in demanding, high-alpine terrain with an eastern cable car hazard and a high catch fence with masts on the western side. There is an increased risk of accidents. A B-license is mandatory for all pilots. Tandem pilots must present a written briefing confirmation, which is provided on-site by one of the DHV safety officers at ODV.
The summit area includes two official launch sites: the summit launch site (launch direction SSE – SW [160° - 230°]) and the west launch site (launch direction SW – W [230° - 270°]). The launch site under the terrace is tolerated but can be closed by the cable car at any time. Launching to the east (launch direction E [80° - 160°]) is prohibited and will result in the revocation of the cable car pass or a flight ban.
Please be mindful of pedestrians on the path below the terrace launch site. If someone is on the path, launching is not allowed until the launch path is completely clear. Ensure that pedestrians do not walk into the launch area during the launch process. If an accident occurs between a launching paraglider and a pedestrian, the launch site may be closed.
Hang gliders can only set up at the summit launch site (also the hang glider launch site) due to the terrain. Paragliders (B-license holders) can use all launch sites. Landing, top landing, aerobatics, and daring flight maneuvers are prohibited in the launch site areas.
The Nebelhorn is a classic site for good FAI triangle flights in Germany. The main launch site is the Edmund-Probst-Haus at the middle station, where launches are made to the west. The summit launch site is reached via another cable car section and is challenging due to its steepness. A firm surface, suitable weather conditions, and flight experience are prerequisites for launches. An unrestricted pilot's license is required here. For tandem launches, an additional permit must be obtained from ODV e.V.
Another launch site is located further west (Gaißfuß), which is accessible on foot. The Gaißfuß is significantly easier in terms of terrain compared to the Nebelhorn summit. The landing site Oibele is surrounded by trees and is considered turbulent.

The Nebelhorn is the most popular flying site in the Hochallgäu region. In 1989, the Alps were crossed to South Tyrol from here with a paraglider. Optimal flying conditions are in the early morning, with southern to western winds being ideal. There is a long thermic period, including winter thermals.
Difficulty: The challenging terrain should be thoroughly examined before the start. Consider thermals and valley wind systems. Above the mountain stations/Probsthaus, an avalanche rope lies across the green slopes on the west side of a notch. This rope is not visible from the air, so flights on the east side and searching for updrafts on the west flank should be avoided.
