Description
The Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf, Germany, is a highly frequented and popular paragliding site, known for its excellent cross-country (XC) potential. The site is situated in the high alpine terrain of the Allgäu Alps, making it a challenging yet rewarding location for experienced pilots.
The Nebelhorn area includes all launch sites accessible via the summit cable car. These sites are located in demanding, high-altitude terrain with an eastern cable car hazard and a high catch fence with masts on the western side. Due to the increased risk of accidents, a B-license is mandatory for all pilots. Tandem pilots must present a written briefing confirmation from a DHV safety officer at the ODV before they are allowed to launch.
The summit area features two official launch sites: the summit launch site (facing SSE – SW [160° - 230°]) and the west launch site (facing SW – W [230° - 270°]). The launch site under the terrace is tolerated but can be closed by the cable car company at any time. Launching towards the east (facing E [80° - 160°]) is prohibited and will result in the revocation of the cable car pass or a flight ban.
Pilots must be cautious of pedestrians on the path below the terrace launch site. Launching is only permitted when the path is completely clear. If an accident occurs between a launching paraglider and a pedestrian, the launch site may be closed.
Hang gliders can only set up at the summit launch site due to terrain constraints. Paragliders with a B-license can use all launch sites. Landing, top landing, aerobatics, and risky maneuvers are prohibited in the launch site areas.
The Nebelhorn is renowned for excellent FAI triangle flights in Germany. The main launch site is at the Edmund-Probst-Haus at the middle station, where launches are made towards the west. The summit launch site, reached via another cable car section, is steep and requires a firm surface, suitable weather conditions, and flight experience. Another launch site, Gaißfuß, is located further west and is accessible on foot. It is significantly easier than the Nebelhorn summit. The landing site, Oibele, is surrounded by trees and can be turbulent.

The Nebelhorn is the most popular flying site in the Hochallgäu region. Optimal weather conditions include southern to western winds, with a long thermic period and winter thermals. Pilots should carefully examine the challenging terrain before launching and consider thermals and valley wind systems.
