Description
This peak in New Zealand, with an elevation ranging from 1286 to 1340 meters, offers a variety of takeoff options and is ideal for hike-and-fly adventures. It's occasionally used, making it a less crowded spot for paragliding enthusiasts. The site is known for its thermalling opportunities and scenic cross-country flights.
The best time to visit is probably in winter, providing stunning views across the Waimakariri Valley to peaks like Mt Rolleston and Avalanche Peak over Arthur’s Pass. In summer, the east-facing slopes of sun-baked rocks and scree can help you get airborne, although the valley breeze can be challenging, often pushing pilots down to the Waimakariri river flats. A better option might be to aim for Klondyke Corner, a forested spur by the Arthur’s Pass road, which captures the valley breeze and offers a choice between two mountain ranges and extensive wilderness.
Access to the site is relatively straightforward. It's a three-hour drive from Christchurch on the Arthur’s Pass public road, stopping before crossing the Waimakariri River. From there, follow the track past Bealey Hut and then ascend the slopes to the summit. The launch area consists of tussock slopes, which may be covered in snow depending on the season, and landing can be done either on the slope or in the wide valley below.
Weather conditions can vary, with strong valley breezes following the Waimakariri to the mountains on good days and strong thermic conditions on the arid rocky slopes. Always check the weather forecast for the Canterbury high country before planning your flight.
