Description
Monte Stivo, located in the Arco region of Italy, offers a variety of paragliding opportunities for both novice and experienced pilots. The site features multiple takeoff points, each with its own unique characteristics.
The primary takeoff points on Monte Stivo are:
1. **Eremo di S. Giacomo**: This takeoff is accessible by foot and is often used for evening glides down to Arco, with landing at the city's sports field. It is rarely used for cross-country (XC) flights.
2. **Le Prese**: Situated at an altitude of 1,600 meters, this takeoff can be reached by following the directions to Passo S. Barbara from Val di Gresta or from the SP road ascending from Bolognano. After parking, a 40-minute walk along a dirt road (marked 666 bis) leads to the takeoff point. This location is ideal for evening glides to Arco and is rarely used for XC flights.
3. **Monte Stivo Summit**: At an altitude of 2,059 meters, reaching the summit requires a strenuous hike of approximately 2 hours, especially with paragliding gear. Alternatively, pilots can arrive by air or arrange transport with the local refuge manager. The summit offers a broad, semi-flat grassy area suitable for takeoff, with possibilities for morning and evening glides to Arco, Passo Bordala, and Mori. Optimal conditions allow for XC flights towards Monte Altissimo to the south and Monte Bondone to the north. However, flights to the Sarca Valley are discouraged during midday due to the strong south-west wind from Lake Garda (Óra).
