Description

Monte Prana, located in the southern part of the Alpi Apuane in Tuscany, Italy, offers a unique paragliding experience. The site is known for its panoramic flights and is occasionally used by paragliders. The launch altitude is 1021 meters with a height difference of 980 meters, making it suitable for easy to medium-level flights. The site is particularly beautiful, with gentle slopes covered in grass, making takeoff easy and safe. The landscape is almost lunar, with rocks emerging from the grass and cows grazing nearby. The view includes the sea to the west and the surrounding mountains, such as Monte Matanna and Monte Gabberi. The probability of good flying conditions is high, with robust thermal activity during the warmer hours of the day, aided by consistent valley winds. This site is suitable for both beginners and experienced pilots, offering opportunities for cross-country flights in all directions. Access to the launch site can be challenging. From Camaiore, take the state road towards Lucca to the Montemagno pass, then continue towards Gombitelli and the Lucese pass. A small road behind a restaurant leads to a large white house, from where a fenced path takes you to the launch site in less than an hour. The launch area faces south-west to west and can accommodate moderate north-west winds. The takeoff is generally easy, with a thermal breeze providing a safe launch. Top landing is relatively easy, with ample space available. However, avoid landing near the watering ponds as they are downwind. The launch area itself is spacious enough for top landing despite some scattered rocks. The official landing zone is at the athletic facilities of the Camaiore athletics association in Tori, visible from the launch site. The landing altitude is 70 meters, achievable with a glide ratio of 1:4, even for modern school gliders. If the field is closed, alternative landing spots include the athletic field or the cross track near the access road, though be mindful of visible power lines.
