Best Conditions
Description
Located at Passo del Giogo (Scarperia-Firenzuola provincial road), this paragliding site in Italy offers an easy takeoff, especially with a headwind up to 15 km/h. If there's no wind, it's best to start from the highest point to clear the trees without any issues. However, be cautious of strong winds as the pass is not suitable for sustained winds common in other locations.
There are several official landing zones:
- Omo Moro: Challenging for hang gliders due to the counter slope, but no problem for paragliders.
- CAVET construction site: Located to the left of the takeoff, this large triangular field is uphill for hang gliders but normal for paragliders.
- For XC flights, the plain offers many landing possibilities.
The flying conditions at Giogo are primarily thermal. The area is small, accommodating no more than two wings at a time. Despite the modest elevation difference, thermals can be found right after takeoff and along the ridge towards the CAVET landing zone.
The site has provided altitudes up to 2800 meters, with cross-country flights reaching up to 110 km. The area is also frequented by gliders taking off from Luco del Mugello, often sharing the initial thermals with paragliders.
