Description
Ericeira, Portugal offers a paragliding site at Praia da Vigia, located on the border between the municipalities of Sintra and Ericeira. This spot connects with Praia de São Julião and provides various takeoff options. The most common takeoff points are in front of the parking lot and on the north-facing wall at the southern end of the beach for lighter winds. The primary wind directions are northwest and west. While it is possible to fly with north or southwest winds, the flight can become very turbulent, making Foz do Lizandro a nearby alternative.
The site has a vertical drop of 40 meters, and the beach below always has sand, even during high tides. The usual takeoff is through a small venturi to the right above the beach access in front of the parking lot. The area is free of obstacles, but the verticality of the walls makes top-landing in strong winds more delicate.
Access to the site is via the Sintra-Ericeira road, turning left at the sign for São Julião. Upon reaching São Julião, head south, ascending the road towards Assafora, and before the start of the pine forest, turn right onto a dirt road leading to the beach.
Landing can be done at the takeoff location or, if necessary, on the beach. The wind direction is primarily north, with wind speeds ranging from 14 km/h to 25 km/h. The site is suitable for pilots with skill levels ranging from 2 to 5. The area can accommodate up to 10 wings. Parking is available at the public parking lot of Praia da Vigia.
Please note that takeoff and landing are prohibited from January 1 to June 30, and beach landings are not allowed during the bathing season.
