Description
Takeoff at Matouta (Saint-Joseph) with landing at Basse-Vallée (Saint-Philippe).
Access: From St Pierre, take the CD37 after the locality of Vincendo on the left, indicating Matouta. Drive 1 km, then turn right onto a small paved road, followed by a concrete path on your left. This path goes around a small peak. Park at the bend and follow the trail that climbs to the takeoff.
Takeoff: Situated on a small round peak. The takeoff orientation is East-Southeast. Ideal meteorological conditions include dominant winds from the North or South-Southeast. Occasionally, a West-Southwest wind can bring a return of South-Southeast. Soaring is possible with steady winds, allowing you to gain height over the takeoff and behind Piton Bernard. Thermals are generous above Matouta hamlet and Basse-Vallée village, especially when sugar cane fields are cut.
Landing: The landing zone is on the football field of Basse-Vallée, which is easily accessible and very clear. The flight over the cliff before landing offers sublime views.
Weather Hazards: Be aware of the aerology and wind conditions. Thermals are stronger in sunny weather and when sugar cane fields are cut.
