Best Conditions
Description
Loma del Gato, located east of Almuñécar in Spain, offers favorable thermal conditions for paragliding. This site is suitable for regular use, thermal soaring, and small cross-country flights, with landings typically at the beach.
The mountain range includes launch sites at Loma del Gato, Cerro de Itrabo, and Alfamar, forming part of Almuñécar's local flying area. The launch site coordinates are N 36°45.951' and W 003°39.484', with a height difference of 450 meters. The landing coordinates are N 36°44.848'.
The launch site is straightforward and obstacle-free. For landing, it is advisable to aim for Velilla Beach if you have sufficient altitude.
To reach the site, take the N340 towards Motril. At the Cabria exit, there is a new roundabout. Follow the signs for the Loma del Gato, but do not follow the sign to the Loma del Gato neighborhood. Instead, take the highway feeder road to the second roundabout. Do not take the highway to Malaga; instead, continue straight to the road leading to Loma del Gato. The road is narrow but well-maintained and partially paved. Before heading up, obtain a ticket from the Fly Park Info window or Gustavo's Windsurfing shop near the bus station. The launch site is the only one with a fee, costing 15 Euros for a maximum of 14 days.
Special considerations include avoiding the plastic greenhouse as a landing marker, as it may be too close to the landing zone. Emergency landings are only recommended in La Galera Bay due to new constructions. Preferred landing spots are Playa Cabria or Playa Velilla.
The launch site is managed by the Parapente Tropical flying school, with Antonio Castro as the contact person. A start fee of 15 Euros per pilot is required, covering a maximum of two weeks.
