Description
This site is not recommended for paragliding due to several safety concerns and lack of official status. The takeoff area is essentially a gap between the road and fence line at the north end of a straight section of Highway 1. You will be launching off a road embankment, so traffic is a significant issue if you drop your wing or get pulled over the highway.
Landing is in the same spot, presenting the same traffic issues. When landing, you need to come in very low over the fence line going north and kill the wing as low on the embankment as possible. The area is tight, so only attempt this if you are confident and there is no traffic.
Weather conditions can be tricky. Strong winds can push you over the back and onto the road embankment, so stick to light wind days. The water appears calmer than it is due to some shelter from ocean swells. Note that the point to the north is called Hurricane Point, indicating potentially challenging conditions.
There are no specific rules for this site, but it is crucial to watch for ranchers and authority figures. Do not take off or land if they are around. Avoid landing on the rancher's property as it could lead to legal issues.
Access to the site is approximately 20 minutes south of Carmel Valley and about 8 miles north of Big Sur on Highway 1. Winds are usually cross from the north, but on lighter days, they may come straight in around the point. The area can be sunny even when it is overcast elsewhere, and a wave cloud may form, which can be either fun or annoying.
