Description
At an altitude of approximately 1960 meters, this paragliding site is rarely used but offers a unique experience for those who seek adventure. Located in the Kitzbühel Alps in Austria, the site is known as Kuhkaser. This spot is particularly popular among hike & fly enthusiasts and offers various launch options, including soaring and cross-country (XC) possibilities.
The Kuhkaser is not an alpine hut but a peak, traditionally a ski touring mountain, now also favored by paragliders. There are two main routes to reach this beautiful launch site. The first is the official path, which mostly follows relatively flat forest roads through the Jochbergwald to the summit. The second, more direct route, goes through forest clearings used by ski tourers in winter.
The ascent via the forest road through Jochbergwald is more comfortable but longer. The direct route through the forest clearings starts at the Gasthaus Alte Wacht, a few kilometers south of Jochberg on the road connecting Kitzbühel to Pass Thurn. Parking is available below the guesthouse, and the landing fields are nearby. From the parking area, you descend slightly to cross the Jochberger Ache. After the bridge, the path leads left past a farmhouse and directly into the forest clearing. The terrain is mostly pathless, but you may occasionally encounter a trail or forest road. The elevation gain from Gasthaus Alte Wacht to the launch site is around 1000 meters.
The launch site is not at the summit but on a nameless sub-peak about 50 meters lower, allowing launches in directions from southwest to northeast. The thermal conditions are quite favorable, especially in the afternoon when the west and southwest sides heat up, providing excellent lift. The cross-country flying opportunities are vast, with an easy transition to the nearby Pinzgauer Spaziergang.
There are several official landing sites in the Pinzgau region, but none at the Jochberger Ache. However, the meadows there are mowed from the end of June onwards.
