Description
Located directly on the Germany/Austria border, this site can be attributed to both countries. It features a walk-and-fly, high-alpine launch site known as 'Hauptstart Karwendel,' although it remains unofficial. The Karwendelspitz area is more popular with hang gliders (west launch). Here, you'll find a moderately steep grassy slope that is unforgiving of mistakes. This site is only suitable for very experienced pilots and only when conditions are perfect.
The site is regularly used, particularly in this area, but you can also find other spots further west. It offers excellent cross-country flying potential.
Region: Mittenwald, Germany. Site record: 90.8 km.
Even with a slight north wind, the south launch site has its challenges. It appears to be a nice grassy area, but there is a small cirque behind it that channels the north wind slightly. In front of the grassy area is a cliff, which can disrupt the thermal bubbles further ahead and occasionally draw in wind. Timing is crucial; it's manageable at the right moment, but tricky just before or after. This site will never see a large influx of pilots; you need to know what you're doing, as there is usually no one to ask for advice. However, there are often many curious hikers, as flying activity here is rare.
