Description

Located in the region of Patra, Greece, this paragliding site offers a takeoff altitude of 1520-1540 meters. It is regularly used and provides good opportunities for cross-country (XC) flights, primarily with a takeoff orientation towards the North-Northwest (NNW) and occasionally towards the South. The site record for distance is 116.6 km. The unique feature of this location is its position between two large valleys, allowing flights towards either valley depending on the weather conditions. The takeoff area is situated at an altitude of 1550 meters, with coordinates UTM 43S N x598462- y: 4207462. You can fly with Southeast, South, and Southwest winds towards the Louson valley, and with West, Northwest, and North winds towards the town of Kalavrita, almost every day of the year. Velia is accessible via a 30-minute drive from Kalavrita. Follow the road to the ski resort, pass the Kastria intersection, continue straight for about 1500 meters, then turn right onto the dirt road leading to the antennas. There are two takeoff areas available. This site is considered one of the best in Greece for long-distance flights in all directions due to its excellent conditions for gaining altitude. Competitions have been held here in the past. During your flight, you can enjoy stunning views of the valleys and mountains, including Helmo, Kalavrita, and several neighboring villages such as Agia Lavra, along with various historical sites in the area. Long-distance routes from this site have included destinations like Mt Erimantho, the city of Tripoli, Argos, and Mt Ziria.
