Description
Inspiration Point, also known as Inspo, is a popular paragliding site located near Salt Lake City, Utah. The main takeoff is at an elevation of 2033 meters with a height difference of 600 meters. This site is frequently used for thermal soaring and offers excellent cross-country (XC) potential, with experienced pilots often achieving flights of up to 100 km on good days. It has even been used for National Championships, thanks to its reliable and diverse flying conditions that allow pilots to head North, South, or East.
The scenic views from above the Cascade or Timpanogos Mountains are breathtaking. The site record stands at 158.0 km.
Inspiration Point is generally rated for P-3 pilots due to often strong conditions during mid-day and summer. P-2 pilots can fly here with an instructor but should avoid strong mid-day conditions. Pilots need to pay attention to their glide to ensure they land in an appropriate landing zone (LZ).
Winds:
- Maximum recommended wind on launch: 9 mph
- Safe wind directions: 220 – 300 degrees
Known Hazards:
- Multiple power lines, especially before the cemetery and at the school LZ.
- Trees surrounding LZs, particularly at the church and school LZs.
- Occasional dust devils on launch.
- Potential for rotor if flying behind the launch area, tree lines, or houses.
- Active air during midday in spring, summer, and fall, requiring strong piloting skills.
Site Sensitivities:
- Use LZ 1 (church LZ) on any day but Sunday.
- Use LZ 2 (elementary school LZ) on weekends or after school hours.
- Use LZ 3 (under development as of June 2022) anytime, but ensure it is within your glide range.
This site is the most popular after the Point of the Mountain. It features a paved road to launch and offers good cross-country potential with very consistent thermalling conditions. On the best days, pilots can climb to 15,500 feet. It is a favorite among newer thermalling and cross-country pilots but can become very advanced.
