Description
High School Butte stands at 1995 meters with a height difference of approximately 120 meters. This site is rarely used and primarily suited for soaring. It's important to respect the private property and no trespassing signs at the top of the hill. Additionally, avoid landing on the athletic fields during games or practices.
A pleasant hike up offers various options for launching, with large, easily visible fields below for landing. On days with strong winds, this hill can be soarable. Experienced pilots have occasionally taken flights from High School Butte to cloudbase and beyond.
This south-facing launch is friendly to P2/H2 pilots who are comfortable with somewhat tighter landings. The site features a short hike to a grassy launch area. While not ideal for soaring with multiple gliders, it is a great spot for practicing spot landings with mini-wings or full-sized gliders.
Before visiting, please contact a club member. More information can be found at the Jackson Hole Free Flight Club website: [Jackson Hole Free Flight Club](https://www.jhffc.org/hsb).
To reach the launch, hike up a series of switchbacks roughly 400 feet to the top of the public access area. The grassy launch area has room for multiple gliders to be laid out simultaneously.
The landing zone (LZ) consists of multiple adjacent soccer and baseball fields on school property. Pilots typically approach over the trees and power lines to the east of the field, landing heading southwest to extend the final leg of their approach. After landing, please ball up your wing and pack up off to the side to allow space for other pilots.
Be aware of small trees below the launch, which can be avoided with proper clearance. Power lines run parallel to the road below, so set up your landing approach to clear them with sufficient height. Do not launch if there are any activities on the fields below. The school can generate rotor in the LZ, especially with westerly surface winds. Also, be cautious of sprinklers on the fields, which may turn on in the evenings.
Operating parameters for this site include an ideal wind direction of 160-210 degrees, with wind strength ranging from a minimum of 0 mph to a maximum of 18 mph, and an ideal wind speed of 5 mph.
