Description
The Melibokus, also known as 'Malchen,' is the highest mountain in the Hessian Bergstraße region of Germany. It stands at an elevation of 499 meters. This site is particularly popular among hang gliders (HG) due to its well-maintained ramp and excellent cross-country (XC) flying conditions.
To reach the launch site, drive from Bensheim-Auerbach up the Ernst-Ludwig-Promenade into the forest until you reach the forest parking lot. From this point, driving further without a permit is not allowed. There are six flexible permits available, which are not tied to specific vehicles or individuals. These permits can be found in the Melibokus storage shed.
Each vehicle must display one of these permits visibly behind the windshield. The driver must be a member of the ODC (Odenwald Drachenflieger Club). For every trip, the time, driver, vehicle, and all passengers must be documented using forms available in the shed. After use, permits must be promptly returned to the shed. If you use the last available permit, ensure you take at least one driver back up to the launch site; otherwise, drivers will need to walk up.
Vehicles should be fully utilized, and trips are generally scheduled at fixed times, such as on the hour. However, if a vehicle is fully occupied, departures at other times are also acceptable.
The launch area is located below the Melibokus Tower, behind the start ramp. Due to space constraints, only 8-10 hang gliders can be set up in this area at a time. The ramp was completely renovated in 2014, providing pilots with an excellent takeoff run. Pilots must be aware of the nearby airspace of Frankfurt Airport.
The Melibokus offers superb thermal conditions, making it ideal for cross-country flights. Pilots can easily fly south along the Bergstraße, into the Odenwald, or across the Rhine plain.
