Description
Heavener, Oklahoma, is a popular paragliding site known for its thermal soaring and good cross-country (XC) flight opportunities. The site features two grassy slope launches located on private land along the ridge above Heavener, facing primarily southwest (SW) and south-southeast (SSE). Note that the SSE takeoff is currently closed.
The site has a rich history, having hosted the 1977 National Hang Gliding Meet and being developed in the early 70s by Bruce & Roy Mahoney and other hang gliding pilots. The Heavener Runestone Park, where the launches are accessed, is also famous for a cryptic stone believed to have Viking origins.
To access the launch sites, visitors must contact the site coordinator, Britton Shaw, for detailed information. Pilots must pass through the park, adhering strictly to speed limit signs. The route includes a steep ascent over a rock formation and a significant patch of clay, which may require a 4-wheel drive vehicle in rainy conditions.
Both launches offer thermal flying and ridge soaring opportunities. The southwest launch is positioned on a mile-long ridge, while the south-facing ridge extends 5 miles east of the launch. The launch altitude is 1,402 feet, with a landing zone (LZ) altitude of 609 feet, and a glide ratio to the LZ of 4.7.
Pilots must meet specific requirements:
- Paraglider: Minimum rating P2 FL
- Hang Glider: Minimum rating H2 FL
Recommended wind limits for paragliders are:
- Minimum: 0 mph
- Ideal: 7 mph
- Maximum: 18 mph
- Gust: 5 mph
For hang gliders:
- Minimum: 5 mph
- Ideal: 12 mph
- Maximum: 20 mph
- Gust: 5 mph
The ideal wind direction is 225 degrees, with acceptable directions ranging from 190 to 270 degrees.
Important notes for pilots:
- There is no shade at the launch, so be prepared for hot summer days.
- Paragliders should be cautious of rotor formation when the wind is crossing from the northwest.
- Hang gliders are advised to move further down the hill in stronger winds for a safer launch.
