Directions: From Andermatt to Nätschen, continue on the road towards Gütsch until the 4th hairpin turn. The launch site is southeast of this point. It is a moderately steep meadow. In winter, the launch site is conveniently accessible by chairlift.
Andermatt is located in the Urseren Valley of the Swiss canton of Uri, at the foot of the Oberalp Pass. It has a train station on the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn, which connects to Disentis, Göschenen, and Zermatt. The ski area on Gemsstock (2963m) is served by a cable car and several smaller lifts and is a well-known freeriding center. Andermatt is also famous for its characteristic Bannwald, a protected forest that has shielded the town from avalanches for centuries.
The area near Andermatt at the Oberalp Pass is known for reliable thermals, making it ideal for summer flights. At Nätschen, you can enjoy soaring in SW winds. The site is accessible even in pure glide from Gemsstock, both in summer and winter.
Flight:
Under suitable conditions, you can attempt flights towards Chur (Disentis, Trun, Flims) or towards Fiesch. The Urseren Valley is often overflown as it lies on the Chur-Fiesch route.
Difficulty:
Andermatt is a challenging landing area due to varying wind conditions and convergences. Landing at the valley station of the chairlift is safer than at the cable car landing site on Gemsstock. Avoid flying towards Teufelsschlucht due to cables and lack of landing options in chaotic wind conditions.
Nätschen can also be a waypoint for a walk & fly journey through the Rhine Valley. You can land comfortably near the train station if the thermals do not carry you to the Oberalp Pass and further towards Sedrun, Disentis, Trun, and Flims. Soaring conditions are favorable with light south winds. Do not attempt to launch in Föhn conditions. If flying from Gemsstock, be aware that SO winds at Gemsstock can differ from the Bise at Nätschen.
