Description
Located in Japan, this paragliding site offers a takeoff at an elevation of 896 meters. The site is frequently used and is known for its soaring conditions, with some potential for cross-country flights. The site record stands at 18.7 km.
The takeoff area is well-maintained and accessible by minibus and railway, or you can hike to the top in 45-60 minutes. A beautiful shrine is situated just below the takeoff, providing stunning views of the valley. The takeoff is suitable only for southerly or southwest/southeast winds and is not flyable in north, west, or east conditions.
The landing zone is medium-sized, located slightly up the valley, and features practice slopes on the edge. It is slightly sloping and can be very thermic. The usual approach is a figure of eight to the west in southerly flying conditions.
Weather conditions include thunderstorms in the summer and slippery takeoff areas when covered in snow during winter. A takeoff and landing fee is required, payable to the local club.
Access to the site is convenient via the Joetsu Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station to Jomo-Kogen, with a travel time of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The local club is very friendly, with some English-speaking staff and instructors. The club offers food, drinks, and beer, as well as a simple but comfortable bunkhouse for overnight stays. While there are no showers, you can use one of the local hot springs. The flying site is a few kilometers from the station, accessible by a 2000 yen taxi ride or a club pickup.
